Nick New Columbia Buffet record is easily the best thing they've done, even down to the artwork. And all of their previous artwork was fucking amazing, but y'know, dog. Favorite track: A Defining Commitment.

about

The debut full length from Brief Habits refuses to be pinned down, rather the record spans the sonic spectrum with an impressive collection of power pop song craft, steadfast hooks and piano interwoven textural soundscapes.

Self-recorded by the band in a small industrial practice space on the outskirts of Northern Brisbane, Dan's distinctive vocal would attract attention from J Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Government Issue), who then mixed what would become their S/T album. A bittersweet gem, this is a record of celebration and hard-truths, from four friends who just really want to make music together.

Track Name: The Ocean's Arms
When the weekend drives turn into endless nights
We'll stay out 'till 2 a.m., wake up and start again
Yeah, I know - I left this right?
I've sworn it off one thousand times
But when summer slides in and asks
"What are you drinking? I know we're drinking again tonight"

When the perfect days leave us without complaint
We tend to test our faith and build up walls to fight the case
That this could be all we ever need if we just justify the ends by simple means

Goddamn, it's summer again
Fall back into the ocean's arms
So glad I found you again
In all the lies that light these bars
This is a love for the living
We'll end up sleeping in our cars
Goddamn, it's summer again

But at the end of the night all those lights are far too bright
She said "How about we get out of here?"
I said, "Yeah, alright."
Out in the ocean mist with the taste of a stranger's tongue
The sea salt on our lips, this repetition has begun.
Track Name: A Defining Commitment
Well there isn't much that I can say
It's more than what I can afford
Now that I've given all these words away
Just watch me stumble across the stage
Because I could never really ask you to stay
So you had to go
Now I have to know

Am I all used up?
Did I waste my love on you?
Am I used all used up?
Did I waste my time on you?

Of all that comes between tomorrow and today
You grasp on tightly to the sword
And strike out at all that got away
Because you never really need them anyway.
